Intro to Sailing is an ideal way to "get your feet wet" and try out the sport of sailing with little investment.  The course is designed as a light introduction to the adventure of sailing.

Course Description
You will learn about rigging the boat, sailing terms, basic principles and techniques of sailing, plus experience sailing in and around the Baltimore's Inner Harbor!

Advanced Coastal Cruising is a 6-day cruising course for the sailor who wants to learn
the essential, real-world skills required for off-shore sailing at night as well as during the day.

Instruction includes advanced navigation, anchoring, docking, sailing at night, setting and 
maintaining a "watch" schedule, provisioning and cooking onboard.


Prerequisites:  ASA 101 Basic Keelboat
                          ASA 103  Coastal Cruising
                          ASA 104  Bareboat Chartering

*Suggested Certifications:  ASA 105 Coast Navigation

Course Description
Advanced Coastal Cruising subjects include procedures and preparation requirements for
daylight and night time operation. During this intense course you will practice interpreting and monitoring weather, preparation for day and night heavy weather, safety, seamanship,  rigging
sail theory, and troubleshooting.

Students will demonstrate various skills including trip planning, navigation, helmsmanship,
man overboard rescue, anchoring and more.

Completion of ASA 106 Certification



Able to safely act as skipper and crew of a
sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length
during the day and nighttime in coastal
and inland water, in any weather situation.

Coastal Navigation is a two-day classroom course. For those sailors wishing to
execute an extended passage Coastal Navigation is a relevant and practical course
that touches on everything a good sailor needs to know about navigating in coastal
waters.  Completion of this couse will give the student the theory and knowledge to
make meaningful use of coastal navigation and plotting information.

This course is taught in our comfortable Getaway Sailing Classroom.  It is a combination
of lectures, practical exercises, and home study.  No actual sailing skills are involved in this
course.  The theory and skills learned can be applied as practical experience in
ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering and ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising.

Course Description
Coastal Navigation subjects include but are not limited to chart reading
and interpretation, use of tide and current tables, government publications,
navigation instruments, plotting of compass bearings and fixes , dead reckoning
and much more.

Completion of ASA 105 Certification



The student will be able to demonstrate the
navigational theory required to safely navigate
a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters.

Combo Basic Coastal Cruising/Bareboat Chartering is a comprehensive
5-Day cruising course that combines the material and offers certifications for
both ASA 103 and ASA 104 described above

This course is highly recommended for those interested in gaining the knowledge
and skills needed to skipper a cruising sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay and
adjoining tributaries.

Groups of two or more may customize their dates and schedule private courses
at no additional cost.

Prerequisites:  ASA101 Basic Keelboat Certification

Course Description
This excellent 5 full days and 4 night course begins with an examination of the
process of cruise planning, provisioning the boat, living aboard, weather analysis,
chart reading, port entry, anchoring, extensive practice of onboard skills, and
much much more.

Your USCG licensed Captain/ASA Instructor will stay onboard with you as you
learn the finer points of cruising the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries.  By the
end of the week, the student will have experienced the responsibility of captaining
the boat.

Completion of ASA 103/ASA 104 Certification



Students successfully completing this course will 
receive ASA 103 and ASA 104 certifications.  They
will have the skills necessary to independently
coastal cruise boats 30 feet and above in moderate
winds during daylight hours in and around on
the Chesapeake Bay. In addition they will gain
hands on experience about living onboard.

Bareboat Chartering is designed for the experienced sailor who is interested
in bareboat chartering and extended cruising. This is an intense 3-day and 2-night course. 
Graduates will be prepared to skipper a large crusing sailboat in
challenging wind and water conditions.  Our cruising boats are utilized for instruction. 
Each student will rotate through the skipper and crew positions.

Prerequisites:  ASA101 Basic Keelboat Certification
                          ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising

Course Description
Topics covered include chart reading and navigation, use of the VHF, review of
the boat systems, maneuvering under power, anchoring, planning a cruise and emergency procedures including heavy-weather sailing.

Completion of ASA 104 Certification



An advanced cruising Standard for individuals with
cruising experience. The individual can act as skipper
or crew of a 30 - 50 foot boat sailing by day in
coastal waters. The Standard includes knowledge
of boat systems and maintenance procedures.

Basic Coastal Cruising teaches sailors how to plan and execute a cruise on the
Chesapeake Bay.  This course is a two-day and one night course taught onboard one
of our cruising sailboats.  Your instructor is a USCG Licensed Captain
with American Sailing Association teaching credentials. 

You will enjoy the comforts of our beautiful cruising sailboats that provide
separate cabin accomodations, full galleys for cooking onboard, and oversized
heads with hot showers for the end of your fun, challenging, and educational
day on the Bay.

Prerequisites:  ASA101 Basic Keelboat Certification

Course Description

All classes for Intro to Sailing and ASA101
are small.  A student-to-instructor ratio of 4:1

Instruction is a combination of classwork in our professional classroom atmosphere and practical 
hands on training on our boats with as much time as possible being spent on the boats.

Our ideal location on the Canton waterfront is only minutes from the Inner Harbor and downtown
Baltimore.  The sailing conditions are excellent in the deep, sheltered waters.  It is an easy
sail down the Patapsco River, past Fort McHenry, to the entrance of the Chesapeake Bay and the finest
cruising spots on the Bay.

Basic Keelboat is a comprehensive two day sailing course focusing on the basic skills necessary  to safely sail a small keelboat in moderate conditions in and around
the Baltimore Harbor and the Chesapeake Bay.  Classes are usually held on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am-5:30pm. 

The course is taught onboard Getaway's fleet of 23 Sonars and in Getaway's
classroom located on premise.  Sonars are a quick and responsive 23 foot fixed
keel racing sloop with a large comfortable cockpit.  These boats are high
performance and lots of fun to sail!

Prerequisite:  None

Course Description
Topics covered include sailing vocabulary, rigging and preparations for getting underway, sailing from and returning to the dock, holding a steady course, the maneuvers of heading up, rules of the road, basic knots and chart reading.

Completion of ASA 101 Certification



Upon completion of this course the student will be
able to sail a boat of about 20 feet in length in light
to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar
waters without supervision.
No auxiliary power or navigation skills required.
