Intermediate Sailing
|
Intermediate
Sailing is our bridge course between daysailing and overnight
cruising. Students should be graduates of Fundamentals of Sailing
or have equivalent sailing experience.
Course content:
This one-day course
introduces the techniques of cruising,
including operation of an outboard engine, sailing a small
cruising sailboat, operation of roller furling gear, reefing,
preparing for an overnight cruise, analyzing the marine weather
report, chart reading and basic anchoring techniques. We expect graduates to be able to take a small cruising boat on an overnight
cruise with safety and confidence. Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Sailing (ASA 101) or similar sailing experience.
Boats used for the instruction:
The CAL 22 is used for instruction. For a picture and specifications click here.
Textbook:
The textbook, Sailing Fundamentals by Gary Jobson, can be purchased at most bookstores or at Getaway Sailing. The cost of the book is $21.95 plus tax. Upon request, the textbook will be mailed -- add a postage charge of $4. We recommend that all students read parts one through 4 of the book before coming to class.
ASA Basic Keelboat certification examination:
If you have not already taken the ASA examination you should consider taking it now. The written examination is offered at the end of the instructional period. As you continue your sailing experiences, the ASA certifications serve as mile stones along the way and more importantly can be presented as evidence of sailing skills if you wish to rent a sailboat at another location. Please seriously consider adding this to your sailing resume. The examination, logbook, grading, certificate and presentation to the ASA costs $75.
Schedule:
The Intermediate Sailing course will be offered on Fridays, April 19, May 17, June 28, July 19 and August 16, 2008.
What to Bring:
The best outfit for sailing is shorts, a top and tennis shoes (white soles) or
boat shoes. A hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and water bottle are essential for those
sunny days. Bring a camera to capture the excitement of sailing. You
can bring a bag lunch or dine at one of the several lunch spots on the marina grounds
or in nearby Canton Square.
Cost:
$191.25 for club members, $225.00 for non-members
