5-Day Cruising Course (ASA 103 & 104)

This is a Comprehensive 5-Day Cruising Course that covers the material in the Basic Cruising and Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering (ASA 103 and 104) courses. The course begins with an examination of the process of planning the itinerary and route to be followed to reach your destinations. Your Licensed captain will stay on board with you as you learn the finer points of cruising the Chesapeake Bay and other similar waters. By the end of the week, the student will have experienced the responsibilities of the skipper and will be comfortable being in control. Prerequisites are Fundamentals of Sailing (ASA 101) and Intermediate Sailing or equivalent sailing experience.

Feed back on this course has been very positive; we recommend it for those who want to move ahead rapidly to gain the knowledge and skills needed to skipper a cruising sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay.

Recommended Textbooks: Sailing Fundamentals by Gary Jobson and Cruising Fundamentals by Harry Munns. Both texts are sold at Getaway.

Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104)

The Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering course is designed for the experienced sailor who is interested in bareboat chartering and extended cruising. Graduates will be prepared to skipper a large cruising sailboat in challenging wind and water conditions. One of the large cruising boats such as the Catalina or Beneteau is used for the instruction. Each student will rotate through skipper and crew positions.

COURSE CONTENT:
Topics include weather forecasting, the electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems aboard larger cruising boats, understanding the charter contract, crew orientation and responsibilities, docking and maneuvering under power, mooring, anchoring, navigation (including GPS), heavy weather sailing, over-board recovery and other emergency procedures. This is an intense three days and two nights course, departing Friday morning at 9am and returning Sunday at 4pm. Prerequisites are Fundamentals of Sailing (ASA 101), Intermediate Sailing and Coastal Cruising (ASA 103) or equivalent sailing experience.

Boats used in the instruction:
Cruising boats in the range 30 to 34 feet from the Getaway fleet are used for the instruction. Click here to see these boats.

TEXTBOOK:
Recommended Textbook: Cruising Fundamentals by Harry Munns; it is sold at Getaway. You may also wish to study The Annapolis Book of Seamanship -- it's a great read.

This course is offered Friday through Sunday, May 16-18, June 20-22, August 8-10 and September 19-21, 2008.

Coastal Navigation (ASA 105)

Coastal Navigation is a two-day classroom course. Topics covered include understanding the material presented in nautical charts, aids to navigation, course plotting, dead reckoning, using electronic navigational equipment including GPS. The effects of tides, currents and wind on the projected position of your boat are studied.
Graduates should know how to plan and execute an extended passage. Coastal Navigation is a relevant and practical course that touches on everything a good sailor needs to know about navigating in coastal waters. There are no prerequisites; however, you should study the ASA Coastal Navigation Manual, through chapter 5, before coming to class. Cost of the ASA105 examination is included in the course fees and those who wish to take the ASA 105 certification examination may do so at the conclusion of the second day of class.

Textbook:
The required textbook is the ASA Coastal Navigation Manual. This manual should be ordered directly from the ASA. The cost is $59.35 for members and $65.95 for non-members. The charts required for the course are included.

Advanced Coastal Crusing (ASA-106)

Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106) is a 6-day cruising course designed for the sailor who wants to learn the essential, real-world skills required for off-shore sailing at night as well as during the day. Departing from Baltimore, you will sail south to experience the challenges of the bay. The instructor for ASA 106 will be certified by the American Sailing Association. Instruction will include advanced navigation, anchoring, docking, sailing at night, setting and maintaining a watch schedule, provisioning and cooking aboard. Prerequisites are Fundamentals of Sailing (ASA101), Intermediate Sailing, and Basic Cruising (ASA 103). Coastal Navigation (ASA105) is highly recommended.
