Club Memberships
Q:
Do I sign a contract when I join?
A:
Yes. The contract spells out the obligations and responsibilities
of Getaway Sailing and the rules and procedures which the member
is required to follow. The Club
Contract is available to download for your inspection.
Q: What if I'm not sure of my ability to skipper a boat?
A: After
joining the club you will get a thorough check-out on each of the
boats you wish to sail. You may also wish to take part in the weekly
Practice Sails. The City Sailors Friday evening sailing and social
events is another way to continue your learning and meet other sailors,
as well. In addition to these options, you may decide to take one
of the Getaway instructional courses and receive a 15% discount.
Q: How long are the
boats available for use during the year?
A: Our season
officially begins on April 15 and ends on November 1, but we keep
CALs and Sonars in the water during the winter months.
Q: Will I have trouble getting a
boat when I want one?
A: Very rarely
do we have to tell a member that the boat they want is reserved
by some other member or out of commission; and, when this happens
we are usually able to offer the member an alternative boat. Please
note that if the weather report is perfect for sailing on the weekend
you should call several days in advance for a boat for the weekend.
Q: Can I take non-member sailing?
And, is there an additional charge?
A: You are
free to take anyone sailing whether they are a member or not. There
is no additional fee.
Q: How do I make a reservation for
a boat?
A: Just call
us at 410-342-3110 or stop by and tell us what boat you want and
when. You may also leave a message on our answering machine after
office hours or still another option is to e-mail us at info@getawaysailing.com.
In these last two cases your reservation is not confirmed until
we speak to you on the phone.
Q: How often can I
use the boats?
A: As often
as you like. The only stipulation being that you can have only one
reservation pending.
Overnight Sailing Camps
Q: What is the ratio of counselors to campers?
A: There's a maximum
of 6 campers with a skipper and first mate on each boat.
Q: What are the qualifications of
the skipper?
A:The skipper is a
US Coast Guard licensed captain. Other qualifications: Criminal
background check, first aid/ CPR and life guarding.
Q: How are emergencies handled?
A: Each boat is equipped
with first-aid supplies and counselors have appropriate training
to deal with minor injuries and would take suitable immediate action.
In case of a more serious accident which required a doctor's attention
the skipper would head immediately to shore while calling ahead
to alert someone to be on hand to meet the boat.
Q: What about sea sickness?
A: Mild cases of sea
sickness can be overcome with sensitivity and care; they usually
last only a short time. We have wrist bands and ointment that goes
behind the ear. Also, lots of fresh air and looking out at the horizon
are good cures for mild cases of seasickness. A more serious case
which persisted for more than the first day would be handled as
an emergency.
Q: Can my camper call me during the
cruise?
A: Yes, in the evening
when the boat is in port at St. Michaels and Annapolis. At any time
you can get a report by calling the Getaway office; the skipper
checks in with the office each day before getting underway.
Q: What are the sleeping arrangements?
A: Each camper has
a berth; some of the berths are doubles, so two boys or two girls
occupy these berths.
Q: What about special dietary requirements?
A: It depends on the
complexity of the requirements. Call us to discuss it.
